Our Comforter – Psalm 3:4-5

I was crying to the Lord with my voice, and He answered me from His holy mountain.  I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.

When our spirits grieve and our minds anguish, we can go to the Mountain, and the Mountain will shade us from the blazing sun, protect us from the furious winds, and shelter us from the ravaging hail. For the Lord, our God, is our refuge and strength, our Helper, our Comforter, a Friend upon whom we can depend, especially when our trials are monumental and our strength gone.[1] Although, we may pass through rivers of distress and flames of loss, our hardships will not overcome us,[2] for He, who is always upholding our cause, who restores and guides us, will be with us in the waters and the fire.[3]

Jesus, our Prince of Peace, grants us peace in suffering,[4] giving us sufficient grace to uphold us through sorrows that go deeper than the deep.[5] He loves us with an everlasting love, and He draws us to Himself, bringing us good news in our struggles, healing us, and shining His everlasting light upon us. He declares the days of our mourning ended, giving us a garland instead of ashes and a spirit of praise instead of despair.[6] Though we may be afflicted and saddened, He, who is our hope, leads us to the shores of serenity where our grief turns into rejoicing.[7] He replaces our lamentations with songs of worship and celebration as He surrounds us with His inexplicable, unquenchable joy. He dispels our fear and disquietude as He pours excitement and thanksgiving into our thirsty hearts, overflowing our empty cup with the oil of loving-kindness.

When the earth shakes and the clouds form, do not crumble, nor falter. Rather, run to the Lord, your Comforter. Sit down at His feet and marvel as He lifts the weight of your burdens from your sinking frame, leaving you awestruck at His care for you. Sing Hallelujah as you take your broken heart to Jesus with confidence, knowing that He, who hears the prayers of those who love Him, will not leave you disappointed.[8]

Rest in the everlasting arms of your Savior, and you will find comfort in the Lord of all comfort.[9]

Your love is as a covering

A cloak against the driving storms

A garment that protects and warms

Your love is as a garden hidden

    A secret refuge, safe retreat

Where my Beloved and I will meet

Your love is as a gentle word

   Washing over, immersing me

      In rivers of tranquility

Your love is everything I need

A smile, embrace, a welcome hand

Your love’s the ground on which I stand

Your love is as an offering

A gift that I have not deserved

This place beside my Love reserved
