Constant Companion – John 20:22

And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

The Lord does not leave us to travel the winding, often treacherous, road toward glory with merely our own degenerate hearts to guide us, for He has given us the Holy Spirit as our faithful helper and constant companion.[1]

When He, the Spirit of Truth, comes to dwell within us, He brings power, strength, and discernment.  He guides us in the way of truth.[2]  He comes in the name of Jesus to teach Christians about the glory of the Lord and to keep the Word fresh within our remembrance,[3] so we will not forget what is righteous and pure, and having forgotten, sin against the living God.[4]  He comes to change us from the inside out as He speaks to our hearts, showing us the ways of God and giving us a desire to emulate them.

Oh, how glorious is friendship with the Holy Spirit, and how blessed are we to benefit from His fellowship.  Secure in God’s love, we need not fear abandonment since the Creator Himself assures us that our Helper will be with us, the followers of Christ, always, forever working within us.  He washes us as we enter into the salvation of the Lord, and He renews us so we might experience the kindness and love of God.[5]  He abides in us as we abide in Him,[6] and as we set our minds on praiseworthy and honorable things, He brings us into the joy of life and the beauty of peace, leading us into the fullness He offers to those belonging to God’s family.[7]

Treasure the Holy Spirit’s companionship.  As you welcome His fellowship, He will sanctify you, making you a pure and holy minister of Jesus Christ, acceptable to serve the Lord among the lost.[8]  Allow Him to fill you and embolden you as a witness of Jesus’ redeeming power.[9]  Listen as He instructs you in the ways of God.  Follow Him, and He will lead you along the Highway of Holiness, keeping you on the road, helping you avoid detours into steep, dangerous places where the enemy, having set his trap to entangle you in sin, lies in wait.[10]

Welcome the Holy Spirit, this most trusted of friends and loyal of companions.  Rejoice, for He has sealed you in Christ, making you the beneficiary of so great a measure of grace.[11]
