Mysteries – Job 36:26

Behold, God is exalted, and we do not know Him; the number of His years is unsearchable.

On this side of heaven, mortal men and women see but a dim reflection of God and comprehend but a tiny portion of His plan.  Therefore, until the day we come face to face with Him, seeing Him in the fullness of His power and majesty,[1] we are presumptuous to think we could understand His mysteries, and we do well, rather than speculating, to stand on the clear and firm foundation of the truth given to us in the Word of God.[2]

God created heaven and earth and all that they contain; this we know.[3]  He reigns supreme over His creation, and He provided a plan to reconcile us to Himself through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior; this we believe by the faith He has given us.[4]  He has adopted us into His family and granted us eternal life with Him in Paradise;[5] upon this promise, we can depend.  The Holy Spirit dwells within us opening our minds by grace to understand the Scriptures and showing us the path we should take;[6] His presence we can feel.

Though the Lord has not appointed most of us as theologians, He teaches us these fundamental truths, and He gives us a simple acceptance that much will remain a mystery to us.  He assures us that His timing is perfect[7] and that His Word is living and active within us.[8]  Instead of having us delve into profound questions of life and religion, He focuses us on growing in love and on increasing in faith, so we might know Him more fully.[9]  He gives us a desire for pure hearts, that we might see Him,[10] and He shows us what it means to bear the name Christian with humility and mercy.  As we do, He will hear and answer our prayers, bringing healing and revival to those we love, to ourselves, and to the nations.[11]

Jesus, our light, our promise, our hope, our evidence of things not seen, is all we need.  Therefore, do not be distracted from a walk of faith by disputes over doctrine about which debate has raged throughout the ages and over which learned, faithful, and honorable people disagree.  Rather, pursue a relationship with Jesus that you might know Him, and in knowing Him, that you might draw closer in fellowship with Him.  For in knowing Jesus, though mysteries remain unanswered, victory and joy reign supreme.
