God’s Protection – Psalm 33:16-17

The king is not saved by a mighty army; a warrior is not delivered by great strength.  A horse is a false hope for victory; nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.

History records a long list of victories over those determined to conquer, enslave, and destroy those desiring merely to live in peace and respect for their neighbors.  We can look back at the battles our nation so fiercely fought and rejoice in the freedom won by the bravery and superiority of the ones who served to protect our country and our way of life.

Indeed, we owe a massive debt of gratitude to those who brilliantly execute and bravely fight to preserve our liberty and who continue to stand in the face of peril, sacrificing the comforts of home, fellowship of family, and too often their lives on our behalf.  Yet, in spite of our gratitude for every victory won and every act of aggression thwarted, we know others can never truly protect us, nor can we protect ourselves.  Our riches, armies, vigilance, espionage, and technology cannot guarantee our safety, for unless the Lord guards the city, the watch is in vain.[1]  Ultimately, evil will prevail apart from the protection of our Lord.

We do well to be wise and cautious, availing ourselves of safety resources, supporting those entrusted with our country’s and the public’s safety, but we should not put out trust in them, for they are but created things.  Instead, we should put our trust in the Creator Himself, for He will uphold us.

Rather than depending on security from those who can offer but limited protection, seek the security God alone can give.[2]  Desire Him, and pursue a close relationship with Him, your strength, and your fortress.[3]  Draw closer to Him, and He will draw closer to you,[4] granting you the privilege of standing in His presence.  Acknowledge that He is your protector and stronghold, and as you place the days of your life in His hands, watch as He brings what others plot in darkness into the light.  Stand in awe as He defeats the enemies who rise against you, causing them to flee helter-skelter in desperation to get away from Him.[5]  Watch as they fall upon their own swords in their confusion and disarray, dying at their own hands.[6]

Praise God for He is our shield and majestic sword,[7] our defender when troubles abound, and He alone is deserving of our praise.[8]

Trust not in the power of horses
Depend not on the fight and travail
For no matter how great is the army
It is not great enough to prevail

Do not fall for vigor’s elusion
Nor set your faith on power’s façade
The strongest of men stands defenseless
Apart from the protection of God

Don’t rely on your holdings and riches
Waste no hope on what burns in a day
For your treasure may one day be worthless
Or counselors your interest betray

Put your hope, your trust in the Lord God
Stand your horses and chariots aside
Let Him be your Army and Coast Guard
Follow Him, your Champion and Pride
