Never Too Late – Matthew 21:28-29
But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, “Son, go work today in the vineyard.” And he answered, “I will not”; but afterward he regretted it and went.
Compare yourself to this willful son. If the Father has made His direction clear, but you have said, “I will not obey you,” reconsider your ways, for rebellion brings its servant no reward. Persistent disobedience separates us from the joy of fellowship with Christ and keeps us from abiding peace. Further, disobedience robs us of the joy that fills the hearts of those who fix their hope on the Lord, who trust Him with their cares and desires, and who faithfully submit to His will.
Although the measure of our love for Christ and the key to a rich relationship with Him is willingness to keep His Word,[1] you need not despair if you have mutinied against the Lord’s commandments, for hope is not lost. Take joy in God’s message of reconciliation, which promises that it never too late, while life on earth remains, for the repentant soul to turn from sinful refusal and say, “I will.” For when we set aside our waywardness and surrender to Him, repenting and recommitting ourselves to Him, our loving Father not only forgives us, but He runs to meet us, embracing us as He welcomes us home.[2] He restores us to our high position as His beloved since He desires to give us the beautiful life that He provides for His children when they choose to revere Him, stay close to Him, love Him, serve Him, and keep His commandments.[3]
Follow the instructions of our Lord, walking in obedience, as one covered by grace, standing in the salvation of Christ, and acting through the power of the Holy Spirit. You will find His commandments are not burdensome to you,[4] but rather you will marvel at His gentleness. Do not allow confessed sin to hold you back, for the Lord, in His compassion for you, will tread your missteps under His feet and cast them into the deepest depths of the sea.[5] Therefore, confess your transgressions. Quiet the excuses, admonish the tempters, and shun the mockers. Determine to accomplish the Lord’s good purposes. Say, “I will,” to the Spirit’s leading, and go into the vineyard to perform the tasks the Lord has set before you.
Go where the Lord leads you; do what the Lord commands; and He will purify your heart, wash away your guilt, and sanctify you as He takes you into the altogether delightful place He has reserved for you.[6]
