Willing Servant – Acts 8:29

Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.”

Wonders occur when a willing servant’s path crosses that of a searching soul and each allows the Lord to perform His perfect work through their yielded hearts.  Consider the convergence of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch, and observe the work of the Holy Spirit in that divinely ordained meeting.

When the Lord asked, “Whom should I send to the seeker along the road to Gaza,†He understandably chose Philip as His emissary.  He knew Philip could be trusted with a sacred assignment since he had devoted himself to Christ from the first momentous day in Galilee when Jesus called out, “Follow Me.â€[1]  In obedience to the Lord’s commission to go to all the nations to make disciples in His name,[2] Philip carried the Gospel to Samaria, where his teaching drew many to receive the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.[3]  When the Lord told him to get up and embark on a mission along a dusty desert road, he got up and went forth, for his passion was to serve the kingdom of God.[4]  A person of such steadfastness and faithfulness could expect to perform miracles in the name of Jesus Christ.

Consider the eunuch.  This man had a desire for God, a hunger for truth that took him on a far journey to worship in the holy city.  His quest brought him to the Scriptures to learn of the God he pursued.  He welcomed Philip’s offer to teach him, and he eagerly embraced the Lord, being born into the holy family, as this stranger shared the message of reconciliation to God through Jesus Christ.  Having come into a personal relationship with the One of whom Isaiah prophesized, the Ethiopian went on his way rejoicing.

The fields are ripe for the harvest and the seekers are plentiful, but whom will the Lord send to come alongside them and help them understand the truth?  The harvesters, who have consecrated themselves like the faithful disciple Philip, are few.[5]  Are you among them?

The Father is looking for those He might send on divine appointments.  Might He send you?  Might you become a person like Philip, a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ who keeps tending to the Lord’s business?  Might you obey the leading of the Spirit of the living God and become a holy, consecrated servant of Jesus Christ, so He might use you to offer life-giving fruit from the Tree of Life?[6]
